Sports Illustrated Names Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 2025 Sportsperson of the Year

Today, Sports Illustrated announced that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (SGA) has been named Sports Illustrated’s 2025 Sportsperson of the Year!

In its 71st year, Sports Illustrated’s editorial staff selected SGA after a truly historic season. He led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a franchise-record 68-win season and ultimately, the NBA championship, collecting the NBA MVP and the NBA Finals MVP awards along the way. However, his impact goes far beyond the court. SGA has done more than etch the name of a small market city in the heart of college football country onto basketball’s most coveted trophy. Through his heroics on the court and his vital charitable works in both Oklahoma City and his native Canada, he has forged community bonds and identities in two countries, demonstrating that anything is possible in a place where hoops is the only game in town.

Awarded since 1954, Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year is one of the most prestigious honors in all of sports, given to the athlete or team who best symbolizes in character and performance the ideals of sportsmanship. Previous winners include icons like Billie Jean King, Wayne Gretzky, Serena Williams, Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, LeBron James and Megan Rapinoe, among others.

SGA graces the cover of the Sportsperson of the Year print issue, which hits newsstands January 8th.

The digital cover story, written by Sports Illustrated NBA expert Chris Mannix can be found across Sports Illustrated channels.

SGA will be honored in person at the Sportsperson of the Year Awards Ceremony next Tuesday, January 6th at Wynn Las Vegas, the official home of Sportsperson. Read more about the event here.
